Hyundai Boulder SUV India patent design showing body-on-frame off-road 4x4 concept

Hyundai files patent for Boulder SUV

Hyundai has quietly filed a design patent for the Boulder SUV in India—a serious move signalling the Korean brand is ready to challenge Mahindra Thar's dominance in the affordable off-road segment. This is Hyundai's first dedicated 4x4 play.

Body-on-frame design, not a crossover

Unlike the Creta or Venue, the Boulder uses proper body-on-frame construction—the same rugged philosophy that makes the Thar capable. Boxy design, upright windscreen, flat bonnet, and protective cladding signal genuine off-road intent, not lifestyle posturing.

Patent filing hints at mid-size positioning

Patent drawings suggest the Boulder sits between the Thar and larger 7-seaters. Ground clearance and approach angles will be critical. Engine details remain under wraps, but a 2.0L diesel (~170 bhp) would match or beat the Thar's 110 bhp.

Thar has waited 12+ months, buyers desperate

Mahindra Thar dominates with prices from ₹9.5–10 lakh but waiting periods stretch beyond a year. Maruti Jimny sits at ₹12–15 lakh. A competitively priced Boulder could siphon significant sales if it matches capability at lower cost.

Hyundai's pricing weapon: undercut by ₹1–2 lakh

Hyundai has a proven track record undercutting rivals on price while maintaining quality—the Creta did it against Seltos. A Boulder priced ₹1–2 lakh below Thar, backed by Hyundai's widespread dealer network, could disrupt the segment entirely.

Patent doesn't guarantee launch—patience needed

Patent filings typically precede production by 18–36 months but don't guarantee a launch. Even if approved, a production Boulder won't reach showrooms before late 2027 or 2028. Hyundai may still decide the business case doesn't stack up.

Thar's first real challenger is coming

If the Boulder reaches production, it finally gives Thar buyers a credible alternative backed by proven engineering and service support. Competition will force price cuts and faster deliveries—a genuine win for off-road buyers across India.
